Hardware

GameAWeekController.JPG

Hardware - is a prototype developed for the unit "Computer Game Design" during second year University. Its aims were an intensive studio focussed assessment where games had to be developed within a week. To encourage rapid prototyping off a prompt for a weekly theme or mechanical constraint.

The game was designed to be a track switching obstacle dodger with the use of the game-a-week controller. It was a plugin developed by our tutor which held functionality for it to be used an input device. Each lane was divided into a set of vertical LED's on the board. When detecting the position of the car on track, a lane will highlight green to show its current position. Additionally, both button on can be used as a joystick to change direction, one left and the other right.

Due to the time span of development, more focus was directed on the position and track mechanic; to correlate the two in sync. When play testing, it was hard to reach the end of the track due to input delay on switching lanes and the car not snapping directly center. Overall I utilized a unique tool to a good standard and learnt how to ammend utility code to meet the prototypes requirements.
